Improve Your Wi-Fi Range and Performance

5 Tips to Improve Your Wi-Fi Range & Performance

No matter if you are subscribed to Spectrum internet or some other ISP, as long as your Wi-Fi doesn’t work right, you can never get the desired speed that the network promised to deliver. Therefore, one must make sure that their Wi-Fi works just fine. Are you scratching your head wondering how you can do it? Well, don’t fret! Here are five ways that help you improve the range and performance of your Wi-Fi.

  • Run a Speed Test

There can be a lot of reasons contributing to the cause of your Wi-Fi slowing down. Hence, you should start with the basics and run a speed test. This will allow you to see the speed that your router is receiving before it converts to a wireless signal. While doing this, if you notice that your router is only getting 5Mbps at the very least then it means that your ISP is at fault here and you should contact them to ask what the issue is. Usually, 20Mbps is common but your exact speed will depend on the internet plan and the ISP that you are subscribed to.

  • Check If You are Connected to 5Ghz Band

If you own a dual-band or a tri-band Wi-Fi router, then you should always opt for the 5Ghz band instead of the 2.4Ghz band. The reason? 2.4Ghz band will never offer you a high-speed connection and is best to make different smart home devices work such as smart speakers, and video doorbells. However, if you want to use the internet on your smartphone, desktop, or laptop then always make sure that you are connected to the 5Ghz band. You can access the Wi-Fi settings on your different devices to see which band it is using. Also, if your router doesn’t support 5Ghz, then consider upgrading it.

  • Reposition Your Router

If your router has successfully passed the speed test but your Wi-Fi continues to be sluggish then maybe it is not positioned correctly. Please note that the Wi-Fi signals can’t easily pass through solid materials. Plus, some other things such as fish tanks and refrigerators can also stop the signals like a brick wall. You should place the router in a central location. This will allow the signals to reach most parts of your home. But what if you need Wi-Fi signals in one part of the house and you are not getting solid signals? Well, in such a case you can do one of two things; You can either move closer to where the internet action is or invest in a Wi-Fi repeater or a mesh router.

  • Update the Firmware of Your Wi-Fi Router

One reason why your Wi-Fi is not working to its full capacity is that the firmware of your router might not be updated. Hence, you need to check if the firmware has been updated or not. Please note there are a few routers that can update their firmware automatically so, use the router’s mobile application if has one or simply access its control panel and see if the needful has been done. However, this process can be a bit tricky if you have an old router. Therefore, it is recommended to check its user manual to successfully update the firmware.

  • Protect Your Wi-Fi from Freeloaders

Nothing can be more annoying than freeloaders using your Wi-Fi, siphoning off your bandwidth. If there are a lot of devices connected to the same internet connection then obviously this will cripple the speed. It might even cause the content to buffer – it happened on my Spectrum TV. And in some instances, you would not be able to use the internet at all! Isn’t that annoying! If that is the case with you then you should immediately access your router’s setting and create a strong password for your Wi-Fi so that no one can connect to your internet connection other than you.

Conclusion

It surely is a lot of pain when your Wi-Fi dies on you, preventing you from gaining access to the internet. What’s even more infuriating is when this issue arises right when you are about to do something really important. But, if you are ever stuck in such a situation, then consider acting upon the above-mentioned ways that can help you get rid of the problem as soon as possible.
